Box Office Recap: January 31-Feburary 2, 2025

Dog Man fetches top spot at the box office with $36 million opening, while Moana 2 achieves major milestone.

2025 at the movies finally a received a much-needed boost at the box office, with the top ten’s combined gross of $74.90 million delivering a +41.3% bump up from the previous weekend. This is primarily thanks to Universal’s Dog Man exceeding its $20-30 million pre-release projections and pulling off a $36 million No. 1 opening. Also opening was Warner’s Bros.’s Companion, which fell comfortably within its $8-10 million pre-release projections with a $9 million debut. Elsewhere, on the milestone watch, Disney’s Moana 2 finally earned its place within the top ten highest grossing animated films.

Winning first place, Universal and DreamWorks’s Dog Man opened to the tune of $36.0 million domestically. The animated action comedy debuted in 3,885 locations, earning an impressive per-theater average of $9,266. Internationally, Dog Man grossed $4.59 million, pushing its total worldwide opening to $40.59 million against a reported production budget of $40 million. Looking ahead, both the positive response from critics and a near-perfect “A” CinemaScore from moviegoers are likely to help strengthen its run. Additionally, the film has no competition in its way until Paddington in Peru’s opening on February 14, meaning it essentially gets a bonus weekend to keep the family demographic all to itself. Of course, time will tell, but for now, Dog Man’s outlook appears to be successful.

In the runner-up spot, Warner Bros.’s Companion debuted with $9.50 million domestically, opening in 3,285 theaters and earning a per-theater average of $2,891. The sci-fi black comedy thriller, which stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, also pulled in an additional $5.50 million overseas for a global cume of $15.0 million against a reported production budget of only $10.0 million. Looking ahead, Companion may have to fight Heart Eyes this upcoming weekend for the attention of horror fans. That said, considering the strong reviews from critics and solid “B+” CinemaScore from viewers, as well as the fact that its already surpassed its production budget, Companion’s forecast still appears bright.

Finishing in third, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King finished its seventh weekend in release with $6.11 million domestically, pushing its total domestic run to $229.51 million. This marks a drop of only -28.9% from its prior frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,922 at 3,180 locations. Internationally, the animated musical, which serves as both a prequel and sequel to Disney’s 2019 The Lion King remake, pulled in $423.50 million, which brings its grand worldwide total to $653.01 million against a reported production budget of $200 million.

In fourth place, Sony’s One of Them Days continued its solid run, earning $6.0 million domestically over its third weekend in release for a domestic cume of $34.45 million. This marks a drop of only -25.1% from its previous frame, earning a per-theater average of $2,601 at 2,306 locations. Internationally, the R-rated buddy comedy has, so far, earned $71.19k, bringing its total global performance to $34.52 million against a reported production budget of $14 million.

Rounding out the top five, Lionsgate’s Flight Risk took in $5.60 million domestically over its sophomore weekend, pushing its total domestic performance to $20.91 million. This marks a drop of -51.7% from its debut frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,771 at 3,161 locations. That kind of drop hovers right around the norm for most movies, which is actually somewhat surprising considering the mixed to negative response from both critics and moviegoers. Such a response typically leads to steeper sophomore weekend drops. Overseas, the Mel Gibson directed action thriller, which stars Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg, earned $4.20 million for a worldwide cume of $25.11 million against a reported production budget of $25 million.

Just outside the top five, in seventh place, Disney’s Moana 2 earned $2.84 million domestically over its tenth weekend in release, which brings its total domestic performance to $453.89 million. This marks a drop of -32.4% from its prior frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,289 at 2,200 locations. Overall, the animated musical sequel has earned $1.037 billion worldwide, which officially puts it in the top ten highest grossing animated films of all-time, replacing 2017’s Despicable Me 3 ($1.035 billion) for tenth place.

Opening this weekend, Sony will release their rom-com slasher film Heart Eyes, starring Olivia Holt, Mason Gooding and Devon Sawa; and Universal will open their rom-com action comedy Love Hurts, starring Academy Award winners Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose.
