Box Office Recap: January 26-28, 2024
The Beekeeper prevents the Mean Girls three-peat, claims box office title over its third weekend.
It sure was quite a rowdy time for NFL fans with both the AFC and NFC Championships taking place this past Sunday; however, it was another round of “zzzzzzzz’s” at the weekend box office. Aside from a few minor changes in rank within the top five, no new weekend competition led to all five of those films receiving box office drops no higher than -40.0% and remaining unchanged from the previous weekend. The only big change was in who won the box office, with The Beekeeper taking over the top spot and preventing reigning box office champ Mean Girls from claiming its third straight weekend. Meanwhile, on the milestone front, the animated film Migration has finally crossed both the $100 million domestic and $200 million worldwide plateaus.
Winning first place, Amazon MGM Studios’s The Beekeeper earned $7.42 million domestically, moving its total domestic performance to $42.29 million. This marks an impressive third weekend drop of only -13.7% from its prior weekend frame, earning a per-theater average of $2,223 at 3,337 locations. Internationally, the Jason Statham-led action thriller grossed $61.90 million, bringing its worldwide run so far to $104.19 million against a reported production budget ranging between $50-60 million.
In the runner-up spot, Paramount Pictures’s Mean Girls continued its solid run, earning a third weekend tally of $7.30 million domestically for a domestic cume of $60.81 million. This marks a -37.4% drop from its prior frame, earning a per-theater average of $2,059 at 3,544 locations. Overseas, the musical teen comedy grossed $22.60 million to help inch its total worldwide run closer to the $100 million milestone with $83.41 million against a reported production budget of $36 million.
Finishing in third, Warner Bros.’s Wonka enjoyed a seventh weekend pull of $5.91 million domestically for a domestic cume nearing the $200 million mark with $195.17 million. This marks a -12.0% drop from its prior frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,960 at 3,014 locations. Internationally, the musical fantasy film, which stars Academy Award nominee Timothee Chalamet, took in $356.90 million, which now moves its total global performance to $552.07 million against a reported production budget of $125 million.
In fourth place, Universal and Illumination’s Migration earned $5.15 million domestically over its sixth weekend in release, bringing its total domestic performance past the $100 million milestone with $101.26 million. This marks an incredibly low drop of just -5.7% from its previous weekend frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,738 at 2,962 locations. Overseas, the animated adventure comedy has nearly matched its domestic run with $104.89 million. Altogether, the film has now crossed the $200 milestone worldwide with a global gross of $206.15 million against a reported production budget of $72 million
Rounding out the top five, Columbia Pictures’s Anyone but You continued its impressive run over its sixth weekend in release. Dropping only -11.1% from its prior frame, the rom-com took in $4.80 million domestically, pushing its total domestic run to $71.20 million. Internationally, the film, which stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, earned $55.40 million for a global cume of $126.60 million against a reported production budget of $25 million.
Opening this weekend, Universal Pictures will release director Matthew Vaughn’s spy action comedy Argylle starring Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Academy Award nominees Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson and Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell.
