Box Office Recap: February 9-11, 2024
Argylle wins back to back box office crowns despite hefty second weekend fall, while Lisa Frankenstein delivers underwhelming debut.
Argylle claimed victory at the box office for a second straight weekend, but that has more to do with the lack of competition and not its own box office dominance, as the all-star studded actioner fell -60+% over its sophomore frame. The highly anticipated return of Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody fell on deaf ears, with the teen horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein falling short of its $4-6 million opening weekend projections.
Winning first place, Argylle took in a sophomore pull of $6.50 million domestically for a domestic cume of $28.82 million. This marks a steep drop of -62.8% from its opening weekend frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,803 at 3,605 locations. Overseas, the spy action comedy earned $31.33 million, bringing its total global run to $60.15 million against a reported production budget of $200 million. Though it could already be told from its disastrous opening last weekend, Argylle’s second weekend nose-dive is a firm, final nail in the coffin that this is a certifiable flop.
In the runner-up spot, Lisa Frankenstein opened with $3.80 million domestically. The teen horror comedy, written by Academy Award winner Diablo Cody, opened in 3,144 theaters, earning a per-theater average of $1,208. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film did receive a solid “B” CinemaScore from opening weekend moviegoers, which could help lead to positive word of mouth. Also, there are two silver linings of note that could possibly counter its underwhelming debut. For starters, it should be noted that no international earnings have been accounted for yet. Second, unlike Argylle, Lisa Frankenstein has the benefit of only needing $13 million to recoup its reported production budget.
Finishing in third, The Beekeeper earned $3.47 million domestically bringing its total domestic performance to $54.73 million. This marks a fifth weekend drop of -34.3%, earning a per-theater average of $1,134 at 3,057 locations. Internationally, the Jason Statham-led action thriller earned $79.20 million to help push its total worldwide performance to $133.93 million against a reported production budget ranging between $50-60 million.
In fourth place, The Chosen: Season 4 – Episodes 1-3 took in $3.15 million domestically over its second and final weekend in release for a domestic cume of $12.59 million. This marks a -46.9% drop from its opening weekend frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,613 at 1,955 locations. Overseas, the hit faith-based series grossed $31.82k, which brings its total worldwide run to $12.62 million. Episodes 1-3’s run ends this upcoming weekend, as it will be replaced by Episodes 4-6 and will eventually be moved to the Angel Studios streaming app.
Rounding out the top five, Wonka continued its impressive run over its ninth weekend in release. The musical fantasy took in $3.13 million domestically, bringing its total domestic run to $205.25 million. This marks just a -33.2% drop from its prior weekend frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,130 at 2,764 locations. Internationally, the Willy Wonka prequel, which stars Academy Award nominee Timothee Chalamet, earned $382.30 million for a global cume that is drawing closer to the $600 million mark with $587.55 million against a reported production budget of $125 million.
Opening this Wednesday, for an extended Valentine’s Day five-day weekend, Sony debuts its Spider-Man Universe spin-off Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson; and Paramount Pictures will release its Bob Marley musical biopic Bob Marley: One Love starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the iconic reggae singer. Also, this upcoming weekend, The Avenue will open their action thriller Land of Bad starring Liam Hemsworth and Academy Award winner Russell Crowe.
