If we receive the Lord before we make the major decisions of life, it can make a big difference in our ability or possibility or capability or position of ability to be able to serve and follow Him properly, can't it? I didn't check it in my Oxford dictionary but I happened to check this particular word in Webster's but it'll be about the same as the Oxford. But perhaps the first one we should mention is that we need to be faithful in prayer in behalf of all of God's people. There's just no way that we can know that. It teaches that we should earn our living by the sweat of our brow, by the work that we do. There are several different ways that we could divide up the whole duty of man. It does teach that we should love our enemies. Because this verse teaches us that it's a necessity to fear God if we're going to worship Him. So even that agrees pretty well with the secular dictionary definition of it. Therefore, when he says that the entire sum of life is to fear God, then we ought to take note of just what he is talking about. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (There is a clear statement of this teaching in Acts 5:29, where it says: "Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men."). So it's our duty to receive the Lord as Savior before making decisions about the other major issues of life. Because the Bible clearly teaches repeatedly throughout Scripture that we should resist evil. Now that's the way it should be. If you stop and think about it, you would realize it but unless you stopped to think about it, you might not realize that the Word of God is a requirement before one could have faith. Now we want to think about the next duty which follows on that one and that is the duty to receive Christ as Savior.
