Happy Gilmore, Karate Kid, Superman & More
Happy Gilmore breaks out the clubs again, Daniel LaRusso teams up with Mr. Han, and the Man of Steel soars back into the big screen.
Greetings, readers! Welcome to this week’s edition of Trailer Tuesday. I have six new trailers for your viewing pleasure today, with my thoughts on each of them included. Academy Award winner Mel Gibson returns to the directing chair for his new upcoming action thriller. Adam Sandler reprises one of his most popular roles in the long-awaited Happy Gilmore sequel, and this summer blockbuster season will see the return of two iconic film franchises with The Karate Kid and Superman.
So let’s take a look at the upcoming attractions!
In Flight Risk, a U.S. Marshal (Michelle Dockery) escorts an informant (Topher Grace) to trial for allegedly getting involved with the mob; however, the plot takes a sudden, violent turn when the pilot (Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg) transporting them turns out to be a hitman sent to assassinate the informant.
Happy Gilmore 2 reunites viewers with the titular, slap-shot swinging golfer (Adam Sandler). As of now, little to nothing has been revealed about the film’s plot details, but the teaser does at least reveal that original film’s costars Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald are returning as Happy’s love interest Virginia and arch-nemesis Shooter McGavin, respectively.
The worlds of the original Karate Kid films and 2010’s loose remake come together in Karate Kid: Legends. After moving to New York City with his mother, young kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) struggles to fit into his new surroundings, but attempts to gain guidance through martial arts. After entering a karate competition, Li’s teacher, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), realizes they’re gonna need help and enlists the aid of original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) in hopes of combining their skills to create a new legacy for Li.
Love Me takes place in a post-apocalyptic world following humanity’s extinction. A lonely AI-powered buoy (Academy Award nominee Kristen Stewart) falls for an orbiting satellite (Academy Award nominee Steven Yeun), and begins communicating with it. As the two connect further, they adapt the avatars of an influencer couple to “flesh out” their existences, but quickly discover that being human is far more complicated than they anticipated.
After first delivering the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel, followed by The Suicide Squad for DC, writer/director James Gunn is finally kicking off his new, and hopefully improved, reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe with 2025’s Superman. Much like Happy Gilmore 2, this teaser doesn’t really provide much in terms of plot and is more a montage of scenes (all set to a terrific remix of John Williams’s classic theme). We do, though, get glimpses of who and what to expect with Gunn’s take on the Man of Steel (David Corenswet), with appearances from, of course, love interest Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and arch-nemesis Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), but also new additions such as Krypto the Superdog, Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabel Merced), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi).
From faith-based filmmakers Jon Gunn and the Erwin Brothers, The Unbreakable Boy centers on parents Scott (Zachary Levi) and Teresa (Meghann Fahy) as they navigate through the struggles in raising their son Austin (Jacob Laval), who has a dual diagnosis of autism and brittle bone disease. Despite their son’s limitations, as well as some personal battles they face along the way, they lean on their faith and each other to lift them up during these trying times.
