Fantastic Four, Jurassic World, Thunderbolts & More

It’s raining franchise sneak peeks over the Super Bowl weekend.

Greetings, readers! Welcome back for another round of movie trailer goodness in this week’s edition of Trailer Tuesday. This week’s offering is a Super Bowl-sized, franchise-heavy big one, with some popular intellectual properties showing up strong in six trailers. After a number of previous film iterations, Marvel Studios finally delivers their take on The Fantastic Four. ScarJo enters the world of Jurassic Park. And a band of antiheroes team up for a chance at redemption in Marvel’s Thunderbolts*.

So let’s take a look at the upcoming attractions!

Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing finally join the MCU in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Since this is just a teaser trailer, not much is provided in terms of First Steps’s plot, but we are treated to brief introductions to the Fantastic Four, as well as an appearance by Academy Award nominee John Malkovich in a yet to be disclosed role. One thing’s for certain, though. After multiple failed attempts to adapt the iconic superhero foursome to the screen, the pressure is on for First Steps to deliver something that’s actually fantastic.

It Comes Comes at Night and Waves writer/director Trey Edward Shults delivers his next project, the musical psychological thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow. Based on Abel “the Weeknd” Tesfaye’s album of the same name, the film features Tesfaye as a fictionalized version of himself, who’s pulled into an existential journey by a mysterious strangers (Jenna Ortega). While the trailer is scant on plot details, it’s certainly heavy on aesthetic and ambition.

Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali team up for the next installment in the Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World Rebirth. Covert operatives (Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali) are recruited by a pharmaceutical company to collaborate with a paleontologist (Jonathan Bailey) on a top-secret mission. The mission is to locate three specific prehistoric species in hopes of obtaining DNA that is the magic elixir for a revolutionary, live-saving drug. But, of course, since this is a Jurassic Park film, if you’ve seen pretty much any one of them, you know things aren’t gonna go as planned.

SpongeBob SquarePants’s arch-nemesis Plankton is finally getting his own movie in Plankton: The Movie. After his plans for world domination are halted when his computer wife Karen (voiced by Jill Talley) goes rogue, Plankton (voiced by Mr. Lawrence) is forced to team up with his newfound frenemy SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) to stop Karen’s quest for world destruction.

Everyone’s favorite, diminutive, blue-colored creatures are back on the big screen in Smurfs. After Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) is mysteriously captured by the evil wizard Gargamel and his brother Razamel (voiced by J. P. Karliak), Smurfette (voiced by Rihanna) and Papa Smurf’s brother Ken (voiced by Nick Offerman) lead the Smurfs on a mission to rescue their beloved leader.

Marvel Studios is finally assembling their version of DC’s Suicide Squad with Thunderbolts*. CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) recruits a motley crew of castoffs, led by Yelena Belova (Academy Award nominee Florence Pugh), for an all-new, dangerous mission. However, when they discover that they are being manipulated by the power-hungry director and forced to confront their tortured pasts, these disillusioned misfit toys must band together or risk tearing themselves apart.
