Companion, Heart Eyes, Presence & More

Psychopaths and slasher villains and haunted houses, oh my!

Greetings, readers! Welcome back for another round of movie trailer goodness in this week’s edition of Trailer Tuesday. This week’s offering brings six new trailers, with the horror, action and sci-fi genres being heavily represented among them. The creators behind 2022’s fantastic Barbarian are back with their new, unhinged psychological thriller. Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh takes on the haunted house sub-genre, but with a twist. And could we possibly be seeing the next sadistic killer to join Leatherface, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Ghostface in the slasher villain hall of fame?

So let’s take a look at the upcoming attractions!

In Companion, after an AI sex-bot named Iris (Sophie Thatcher) discovers the true, devious intentions of her “beau” Josh (Jack Quaid), she seeks to break free from her programming… even if that means taking drastic, bloody measures.

This Valentine’s Day, Heart Eyes “can’t take their eyes off you”. For the past several years, no couple would be safe on Valentine’s Day if the infamous “Heart Eyes Killer” wreaked havoc in their area. When Heart Eyes finally strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers (Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding) working overtime on the holiday find themselves running for their lives after they’re mistaken for a couple by the deranged killer.

Based on the George R. R. Martin short story, director Paul W. S. Anderson teams up with Dave Bautista and Anderson regular Milla Jovovich (aka Mrs. Paul W. S. Anderson) for the fantasy epic In the Lost Lands. A queen sends out the powerful and feared sorceress Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich) in search of the magical gift of shape-shifting. Teaming up with warrior guide Boyce (Dave Bautista), the duo set out into treacherous territory, battling monstrous creatures and merciless enemies along their journey.

In Kinda Pregnant, Lainy Newton (Amy Schumer) is a newly single teacher who suddenly becomes jealous after learning that her best friend Kate (Jillian Bell) is pregnant. So, obviously, the solution there is donning a fake baby bump and tricking everyone into thinking she too is pregnant. Buuuut, of course, things get complicated after she meets the man of her dreams in Josh (Will Forte), finding it difficult to get out of the lie she created.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven, Unsane) delivers a unique take on the ghost story with Presence. When parents Rebekah (Lucy Liu) and Chris (Chris Sullivan) move their family into a nice suburban home, they quickly discover that their new abode is already occupied by – yep, you guessed it – a presence. The twist here, though, is that Soderbergh and writer David Koepp (Jurassic Park, The Paper, Stir of Echoes, Panic Room) present the entire story from the perspective of said presence.

In A Working Man, Jason Statham reunites with The Beekeeper helmer David Ayer for another round of kicking ass and taking names. Levon Cade (Jason Statham) is an ex-Royal Marines commando trying to rebuild a simple, peaceful life as a construction worker. That rebuild comes crashing to a halt when his boss’s daughter Jenny (Arianna Rivas) is kidnapped by human traffickers. So, just when he thought he was out, those traffickers pull him back in, but little do they know he’s, of course, bringing his particular set of skills to disrupt their corrupt trade.
