Box Office Recap: January 19-21, 2024
Mean Girls holds on to the box office crown for second straight weekend.
It was a pretty quiet time at the box office this past weekend, with the top five films remaining unchanged from the previous weekend. Additionally, the entire top ten grossed only $51.28 million, a grand total figure that gets dwarfed by most blockbusters just on their own. Despite dropping nearly -60% from its opening weekend, Mean Girls managed to score back-to-back weekends atop the box office chart with a $10+ million haul. Meanwhile, the sci-fi thriller I.S.S. opened with a very quiet $3 million debut.
Winning first place, Paramount Pictures’s Mean Girls brought in $11.70 million domestically over its a sophomore frame, pushing its total domestic performance up to $50.05 million. This marks a drop of -59.1% from its debut frame, earning a per-theater average of $3,058 at 3,826 locations. The musical teen comedy, which serves as both a remake of the 2004 Linsday Lohan film and adaptation of the 2017 Broadway musical, earned an additional $16.20 million for a worldwide cume of $66.25 million against a reported production budget of $36 million.
In the runner-up spot, Amazon MGM Studios’s The Beekeeper earned a sophomore weekend pull of $8.48 million domestically for a domestic cume that currently stands at $31.14 million. This marks a sophomore drop of -48.8% from its debut frame, earning a per-theater average of $2,547 at 3,330 locations. Internationally, the Jason Statham-led action thriller grossed an additional $44.20 million, bringing its current global run to $75.34 million against a reported production budget ranging between $50-60 million.
Finishing in third, Warner Bros.’s Wonka earned $6.44 million domestically, pushing it total domestic run to $187.17 million. This marks a sixth weekend drop of -23.9% from its prior frame, earning a per-theater average of $2,053 at 3,136 locations. Overseas, the musical fantasy film has so far earned nearly double its domestic run with $344.60 million for a worldwide cume of $531.77 million against a reported production budget of $125 million.
In fourth place, Columbia Pictures’s Anyone but You continued its nice run, bringing in a fifth weekend haul of $5.40 million domestically for a domestic cume of $64.22 million. This marks a drop of only -24.2% from its prior weekend frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,844 at 2,928 locations. Internationally, the rom-com has earned $36.0 million to help push its total worldwide performance past the $100 million milestone with $100.22 million against a reported production budget of $25 million.
Rounding out the top five, Universal and Illumination’s Migration closed out its fifth weekend in release with $5.30 million domestically, pushing its total domestic performance to $94.67 million. The marks an impressively soft drop of just -15.0% from its previous frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,712 at 3,094 locations. Internationally, the animated adventure comedy has earned an additional $96.97 million, which brings its total global run right on the cusp of surpassing the $200 million mark with $191.64 million against a reported production budget of $72 million.
Outside the top five, in seventh place, Bleecker Street Media’s I.S.S. debuted with $3.02 million domestically. The sci-fi thriller opened in 2,518 locations, earning a per-theater average of $1,200. While critical reception was moderately favorable, the “C-” CinemaScore from opening weekend moviegoers could be an area of concern for the film’s overall box office run. Still, it should be noted that any overseas earnings have yet to be accounted for, and it also has the benefit of only needing to recoup a reported production budget of $14 million.
This upcoming weekend will feature no nationwide theatrical releases. The following weekend, February 2, will see the release of the next major motion picture, which is Matthew Vaughn’s spy action comedy Argylle starring Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Academy Award nominees Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson and Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell.
