Box Office Recap: February 10-12, 2023
Magic Mike dances its way to the top of the box office over a very quiet Super Bowl weekend.
With all eyes focused on the Super Bowl, and no major 3,000-4,000 screen wide releases opening, it was a very quiet weekend at the box office, with all of the top ten films each grossing under $10 million, and their combined grosses totaling $47.3 million, which is a drop of -34.5% from last weekend’s top ten haul. For perspective on how quiet the weekend really was, all ten films totaled what some major tent-pole films far outperform over their debut. Nevertheless, Magic Mike’s Last Dance managed to claim the top spot at the box office, despite receiving a smaller release than normal, with an $8 million debut. Meanwhile, Academy Award winner James Cameron had two films land in the top five, with Avatar: The Way of Water and his Best Picture-winning Titanic, which received a limited time 25th Anniversary release that saw it bringing in around $6 million.
Warner Bros.’s Magic Mike’s Last Dance received a semi-wide release in only 1,500 locations. For comparison, the first film, 2012’s Magic Mike, opened in 3,120 locations and the first sequel, 2015’s Magic Mike XXL, opened in 3,376 locations. Regardless of WB’s reasoning for limiting the amount of screens, the dance-themed dramedy, starring Channing Tatum and Academy Award nominee Salma Hayek Pinault, still took home first place with $8.2 million domestically, which averages out to $5,466 per location. Internationally, the film brought in an additional $10.4 million, which brings its total worldwide debut to $18.6 million against a reported production budget ranging between $45-50 million. Given its scaled-down release, barring an expansion from WB, it appears highly unlikely that the third film of this Magic Mike trilogy will be matching the worldwide totals of both the first ($167.3 million) and second ($117.8 million) films.
20th Century Studios’s Avatar: The Way of Water bumped back up from third place last weekend to the runner-up spot with a ninth weekend domestic finish of $6.9 million, bringing its total domestic haul to $646.9 million. Altogether, Oscar winner James Cameron’s sci-fi actioner has earned $2.213 billion worldwide, which has it just inches away from replacing Cameron’s other box office juggernaut, Titanic ($2.216 billion) for third place on the all-time worldwide box office chart.
Speaking of that box office juggernaut, to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Titanic received a re-release just in time for Valentine’s Day this week and earned a third-place finish with $6.4 million domestically, earning a per-theater average of $2,597 at 2,464 locations. Overseas, the record-tying 11-time Oscar-winning romantic historical drama brought in an additional $15.9 million for a worldwide weekend run of $22.3 million. Overall, this pushes its lifetime worldwide gross to $2.216 billion.
Landing in fourth place, the sports comedy 80 for Brady grossed $6.0 million domestically over its sophomore frame, pushing its domestic total $24.9 million against a reported $28 million production budget. This marks a -52.8% drop from its debut frame, earning a per-theater average of $1,523 at 3,939 locations.
Knock at the Cabin narrowly edged out Puss in Boots: The Last Wish for fifth place, earning a sophomore weekend run of $5.501 domestically for a domestic cume of $23.5 million. This marks a hefty -61.1% drop from its debut frame, most likely due to the divisive reception from opening weekend moviegoers, earning a per-theater average of $1,504 at 3,657 locations. Internationally, the film earned an additional $13.3 million for a worldwide cume of $36.8 million against a reported production budget of $20 million.
Opening this weekend, Marvel Studios opens the next chapter of their Marvel Cinematic Universe with the highly anticipated Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors and Academy Award winner Michael Douglas.
